Pony hair bags weren’t on anyone’s radar even a couple of seasons ago, and then, almost overnight, they were everywhere, on the runway, in resale listings, and stacked in carousel posts with captions giving texture its new claim to fame. This trend traces back to Paris, where designers began favoring something furrier during the Spring/Summer 2026 Season, a style that hit a fever pitch at Chanel, where creative director Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection introduced a pony hair pump so coveted it became nearly impossible to buy. By couture week that January, this texture was seen across the runway through Schiaparelli and again throughout Chanel’s Métiers d’Art and Fall/Winter 2026 shows.

Despite the name, most pony hair accessories aren’t made from actual pony. In the fashion industry, “ponyhair” is largely synonymous with calf hair—hide that’s tanned with the fur still attached, giving it a short, dense, velvety texture. It’s a material that had its moment in the ‘90s and early 2000s before falling out of fashion, making its return all the more nostalgic.

This trend has hit the resale market at record speed. The RealReal and Vestiaire Collective are swarmed with pony and calf-hair bags, with vintage pieces from Fendi, Prada, and even Gucci’s early-2000s Tom Ford era. Baguettes and mini shoulder bags in leopard-printed or dyed pony hair are proving especially popular, likely because their original silhouettes match the current Y2K revival.

New releases are catching up just as fast, with several luxury labels introducing pony hair accessories for Fall/Winter 2026, with a variety of bags in addition to phone cases and shoes, all treating the texture as a neutral. Like how suede and smooth leather have been shown off in the past, this time pony hair is seen as something to wear year-round.

A big part of the appeal lies in its practicality, as pony hair hides scuffs and wears far better than smooth leather, making vintage pieces from years ago look remarkably fresh. For those looking to try the trend without committing to a bag from Fendi’s new line, other accessories offer a solid entry point to the world of pony hair. Wristlets, wallets, belts, laptop sleeves, and so many more options give you the texture in a more subtle way. Though, as with any fur or hide product, care matters, and pony hair should be kept away from moisture and stored in a dry, breathable space to prevent matting or the hair drying out. And before a purchase, it’s good to keep in mind that, real or faux, it’s still an animal-hide product, so it’s worth checking a brand’s sourcing before buying if that’s a consideration.

So if you’ve been eyeing something furry in your cart, consider this a sign to jump into the trend and tote around your own personal pony-hair purse.
