The United States Secret Service said it and a Palm Beach County Sheriffs deputy fatally shot a man after he attempted to unlawfully enter a secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said the man was seen by Mar-a-Lago’s north gate carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel can.
Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy confronted the man, and a law enforcement agent opened fire, Guglielmi said.
Palm Beach police say they will give more information at a press conference Sunday morning.
The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Trump was not in Florida at the time of the shooting, and was scheduled to be in Washington Sunday.
