Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Even before its August 8, 2025 release, Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated horror-thriller Weapons was already dominating online discussion. Early reviews gave it a rare perfect score, sitting at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. While that number dipped slightly in the days leading up to its premiere, the film still boasts an impressive 96% rating after more than 210 critic reviews—a sign of its lasting impact and broad critical praise.

The film opens with an unsettling premise: seventeen children from the same class vanish at exactly 2:17 a.m. Their disappearance sends shockwaves through the community, told through intersecting storylines—a grief-stricken teacher (Julia Garner), a determined father (Josh Brolin), and a cop on the edge (Alden Ehrenreich). At the center of it all is Alex (Cary Christopher), the sole child left behind. But as the story unravels, it becomes clear the real cause of the horror is Alex’s great-aunt Gladys, portrayed by 74-year-old Amy Madigan.

Madigan delivers a chilling performance as the frail yet menacing Gladys, a woman seemingly trained in dark rituals and manipulations that drive the film’s most shocking twists. Cregger reportedly offered her the role after a single meeting, convinced she was perfect for it—a decision critics now call one of the film’s greatest strengths. Her ability to balance vulnerability with palpable menace makes her the movie’s secret weapon.

Her turn in Weapons adds to a rich career spanning more than four decades. Madigan broke through in the early ’80s with Love Child and earned an Oscar nomination for Twice in a Lifetime. Memorable performances in Field of Dreams, Uncle Buck, and HBO’s Carnivàle cemented her as one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents. Now, with Weapons, she proves she’s just as magnetic—and unsettling—as ever.
