He added: „I hope that negotiations going forward are going to include Ukrainian interests and recognize that what we need to make sure is that Ukraine has a security guarantee for the long term, and that Russia can’t continue to advance and engage in its hybrid attacks in Europe.“

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday afternoon that progress was being made toward addressing Kyiv’s concerns over the U.S. plan.

„Currently, there is an understanding that the American proposals may include a number of elements based on Ukrainian perspectives and critical for Ukrainian national interests,“ Zelenskyy said in a post on X. „Further work is ongoing to make all elements truly effective in achieving the main goal anticipated by our people: to finally put an end to the bloodshed and war.“

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said later on Sunday that American negotiators were „working on some of the suggestions that were proffered to us“ regarding the proposed framework. „So we’re working through, making some changes in the hopes of further narrowing the differences and getting closer to something that both Ukraine and obviously the United States are very comfortable with,“ Rubio told reporters in Geneva.

U.S. Senator Angus King, an independent who has been critical of the proposals, told POLITICO that he hopes „after consultation with Ukraine and the Europeans, a more fair and responsible agreement will emerge.“

„Everyone wants peace and for the conflict to end — most especially the Ukrainian people who have borne the brunt of this unconscionable attack on their country — but that peace must be both just and lasting,” he said.
