It’s been a year of waiting, and fans are giddy to return to the yellow brick roads and emerald castles of Oz. The buzz surrounding the first installation of the Wicked movie was met with massive approval from viewers and critics alike, and earned awards ranging from Oscars to Critics’ Choice to BAFTAs.
The color palette of the first film also created a ripple effect, reminiscent of the iconic Barbie pink that took over the previous summer. Fans headed to the screenings dressed in all green or pink, in honor of their favorite characters. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo also reveled in well-deserved praise for each of their roles, along with other stars Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, and Michelle Yeoh.
After a year full of celebrating, rewatching, and learning every word to the first Wicked film, Wicked: For Good comes at just the right time. Although the two were filmed back-to-back, the release of the second film was perfectly timed to revamp the fervent fanbase. So, without further ado, from release dates to the first look trailer, here’s everything to know about Wicked: For Good.
Everything We Know About Wicked: For Good—Trailer
Everything We Know About Wicked: For Good—Plot
With just under two months left for the release of Wicked: For Good, a third and final trailer has been dropped, revealing some new details about the plot. For starters, the final trailer focuses a little more on Glinda’s journey as she navigates being a public figure in the backdrop of Elphaba running away and the consequences. She is officially dubbed ‚Glinda the Good‘ by Madame Morrible and is on the way to marry her dearest Fiyero. Seemingly, all of Glinda’s dreams have come true, but she is still conflicted about Elphaba’s disappearance and declining public reputation.
Elphaba and Glinda are at a yellow-bricked crossroads after their fallout in Wicked. Elphaba is morally opposed to everything the Wizard of Oz is all about, particularly his deceptive nature and vendetta against the animals, and the bulk of her journey revolves around her discovering the extent of her power. There is even a scene in which Elphaba is seen with the Tin-Man, where he asks, „What have you done to me?“ indicating to us that Elphaba is responsible for his new metallic visage.
Glinda’s journey is focused on how she manages being a public figure in the backdrop of everything she’s just learned about the Wizard and her best friend disappearing. She couldn’t be happier; she’s married to her dream man, Fiyero, and is adored by all of Oz. However, as Elphaba puts it, she has ‚no real power‘. It’s clear that this film focuses a lot on Glinda and Elphaba as character foils of each other. Fortunately, they won’t be completely in opposition of each other, as there is a clip of the two scheming. The trailer ends with Glinda telling Elphaba, „Think of what we could do, together“, a callback to ‚Defying Gravity‘ in which Elphaba asks the same thing of Glinda—could a reunion be in the works?
Everything We Know About Wicked: For Good—Theatrical Release
The Land of Oz, a world best seen on the big screen, is returning to theaters once again on Nov. 21. Grab some popcorn and a fellow Broadway enthusiast, and watch the second installment of the Wicked series, Wicked: For Good, at a theater near you.
Everything We Know About Wicked: For Good—Cast
While much of the cast is staying the same, one special addition has been kept secret from the public for much of the film’s promotion thus far. With the final trailer’s release, the mystery of who fills the sparkly red heels of Dorothy Gale has been revealed at last.
Dorothy is played by Alisha Weir, a young fifteen-year-old actress who has previously starred in films Matilda (2022) and Abigail (2024). While her casting is confirmed, her face is not seen in the trailer, and there is speculation that Dorothy will remain a faceless character, similar to the staged version of the show. Once Dorothy arrives, she is tasked by the Wizard to retrieve the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West to ‚prove she’s dead,‘ which does not necessarily indicate that he wants to kill Elphaba, but that he wants to ensure everyone else thinks she’s dead. She is successful in this task, as seen through a clip of Dorothy’s shadow holding the broom, but again, whether Elphaba is able to survive in the midst of all the turmoil is yet to be seen.
