This year, we fête the 50th anniversary of the punk scene. For followers of the movement around the world, this means revisiting favorite albums from the music industry’s most memorable stars, but for fashion fans, the celebration looks a little different. As any pop culture or style savant knows, one of the artists most closely linked to the scene was fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. Between her wholehearted commitment to the sociopolitical causes she believed in, her unparalleled artistic genius, and the attention she commanded in the British fashion scene, Westwood has long been regarded as one of the most influential cultural figures of all time.
Paying homage to the legendary designer and the punk scene’s monumental anniversary this year, Vivienne Westwood: An Active Life has come to the Light House, an institution of art and fashion in London’s Soho neighborhood. Organized by Westwood’s granddaughter and son, Cora Corré and Joseph Corré, in partnership with Ki Price and Steven Philip—renowned celebrity photographer and lifelong Vivienne Westwood collector, respectively—the exhibition shines a light on several rarely covered aspects of Westwood’s life and work.
The exhibition brings together a collection of exquisitely dressed mannequins sporting museum archive looks, over 100 unique shoppable vintage pieces curated by Philip, and a range of rare and previously unseen images shot by Price.
The legendary photographer’s work will be available as limited-edition prints. 50 percent of all proceeds will benefit The Vivienne Foundation—the late designer’s not-for-profit organization, which works to combat climate change, stop war, defend human rights, and protest capitalism.
Beyond offering Westwood devotees a precious opportunity to dive into the artist-activist’s extensive legacy through unique archival items, it also aims to introduce the uninitiated to her mission of frank self-expression, unapologetically bold style, and a deep commitment to her values as the ‚Queen of Punk.‘
Vivienne Westwood: An Active Life runs at the Light House through March 19.
