Before you reach for your eyeglasses, don’t bother. You read that right. Fur nails are officially making their way to the forefront of high fashion this fall.
Wild? Absolutely. Bizarre? Yes. But high fashion has never been about playing it safe. A look that might feel unthinkable in everyday life is often par for the course on the runway. High fashion exists in its own universe, with its own set of rules—rules that invite the unwearable, the unreal, and the unapologetically over-the-top. At its core, it’s art: a reflection of cultural moods, aesthetic extremes, and a space to provoke and play.
For a while, that spirit of experimentation may have stayed mostly within the garments and accessories. Then it extended to hair and makeup. Then to the runway itself, which in the past decade or so has become a theatrical spectacle, a film set, even a political statement, thanks to the likes of John Galliano’s time at Maison Margiela. Nails, though? They’ve often been the unsung detail—easy to miss when garments are loud, silhouettes are architectural, and a model’s headpiece alone could fill your peripheral vision.
But on the Fall/Winter 2025 runways, nails are finally getting their moment. Enter: fur nails.
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like—sort of. Designers aren’t using real fur. Instead, nail techs are creating the illusion with flocking powder, applied to wet polish or a tacky base coat to mimic a fuzzy, velvety texture.
It’s as unexpected as it is impractical. Typing? Good luck. Doing your skincare routine? Probably not happening. And even if you find a nail tech willing to attempt the look, prepare for at least one raised eyebrow.
Still, if maximalist beauty is your thing and you have a special event to lean into the drama, you can always have a DIY moment. Or, you can pick up some faux-fur accents from Amazon and bring them to your next appointment. People might stare, but as always, you have to get it to get it. Plus, come winter, they might even double as insulation. It’s hard to imagine now, in the middle of a heatwave, but just picture those subzero wind chills you used to dread.
Either way, high fashion loves fur nails. Designers like Luar, Thom Browne, and Libertine are already in on the trend. Ahead, L’OFFICIEL gives you a closer look at how fur nails made their runway debut—and why they might just be fashion’s most delightfully unserious flex this season. Perhaps you’ll even ditch the classic cherry red nails for fur nails.
Fur Nails at Luar Fall/Winter 2025
During the Fall/Winter 2025 New York Fashion Week presentations this February, a handful of viral beauty moments made headlines. Designers and stylists pushed boundaries with their hair and makeup, experimenting with looks that hadn’t been done before—going far beyond the usual bleached brows and black lips. It was fashion week, after all. What would it be if not a little unhinged?
Luar, in particular, sent models down the runway with furry, feathery nails. Celebrity nail artist Naomi Yasuda designed the fuzzy detail on three-inch-long square-shaped extensions, topped with crystals for an extra dose of drama.
The best part about Luar’s fur nails? They echoed the collection’s texture play: a full-blown feather-filled fantasy—from dramatic, grandeur headpieces to clutches and coats.
Feathered Lashes at Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2025
Then came Thom Browne’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection. While stylists didn’t embrace fur nails the way Luar did, makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench offered her own take on feathery details. Most, if not all, models walked down the runway with colorful, feathered eye makeup that resembled bird-like lashes, echoing Browne’s aviary-inspired vision and his flight of fantasy for the season.
Fur Nails at Libertine Fall/Winter 2016
Although wildly unfamiliar to most until now, fur nails aren’t exactly a new concept. In fact, they first hit the runway at Libertine’s Fall/Winter 2016 show. And who was behind them? None other than CND co-founder Jan Arnold. At the time, they barely made headlines—only those deep in the fashion or beauty trenches even clocked it. By Spring/Summer 2017, fur nails appeared just once in a single Libertine look, and then quietly disappeared. They may have popped up in a few niche shows here and there, but none made the same impression as that original Libertine moment.
But this fall, they’re clearly making a comeback. Don’t be surprised if your most fashion-obsessed friend is sporting some fur nails with a martini in hand the second the temperature drops to 50.
