After years of buzz, the Tangled live-action is finally coming to fruition.
The original animated film, released in 2010, has become one of Disney’s most beloved films, and the conversation around which actors and actresses has been an ongoing debate in online film and pop culture communities.
After the release and press run of Regretting You earlier in 2025, fans proposed Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames, two of Hollywood’s most promising young talents, for the two lead roles, the princess Rapunzel and rogue thief-turned love interest Flynn Rider. Much to the disappointment of fans, the pair have reportedly not been involved in screen testing yet.
So far, actresses including Freya Skye, White Lotus‘ Sarah Catherine Hook, Teagan Croft, and Olivia-Mai Barrett have emerged as reported front-runners for the coveted role of Rapunzel. Meanwhile, the search for her love interest, Flynn Rider, has proved to be equally fruitful, with actors like Milo Manheim, Charlie Gillespie, and Gilli Jones named as screen testers.
Fans have noted that the shortlist of potential leads for both roles hints at industry interest in supporting young, up-and-coming talent, rather than tapping already widely established stars—in other words, the move will likely set the leading duo up with their breakout roles.
Lola Tung, who portrayed Belly Conklin in the smash-hit TV series The Summer I Turned Pretty, was also considered for the role, but due to scheduling conflicts, she ultimately did not test.
Scarlett Johansson was reportedly being considered for Mother Gothel, Rapunzel’s scheming, villainous guardian, though per The Hollywood Reporter, she is no longer attached to the role.
Filming for the Tangled live-action movie is slated to begin in the UK in June 2026, so fans of the movie should keep their eyes open for a release date and additional details in the near future.
