Telfar, the Black-owned, genderless fashion label founded by Telfar Clemens in 2004, has unveiled its latest creation: a reinterpretation of the ubiquitous shopping bag. While the design nods to the classic plastic carryall, this is no disposable item—it’s crafted from coated nylon, making it both durable and stylish.

The timing is deliberate. New York City banned single-use plastic bags in 2020, a year that also marked Telfar’s brief pause from the fashion scene. Now, the brand is returning with a design that transforms what was once seen as waste into something enduring. The new collection arrives in 11 signature New York-inspired prints and two versatile sizes. The regular size, priced at $148, comfortably fits a laptop and daily essentials, while the jumbo size, priced at $195, is ready for anything you take on during the day.

Beyond aesthetics, functionality is key. Each bag is double-lined and features ruched elastic handles, tonal seams, and a spacious interior. Practical additions include two deep side pockets designed to hold water bottles, a zip pocket, a slit pocket, and a hidden stash pocket. Unlike the flimsy plastic bags they evoke, these pieces are built for everyday use, meant to last far beyond a single errand.

Available exclusively on Telfar’s website now, and in-store at the brand’s New York City location in the weeks following, the bags are poised to become a fixture on the city’s streets—symbolizing both sustainability and style.
