Long queues in New York’s SoHo are rarely justified, but French leather goods label Polène proved to be the exception upon opening its doors on Broadway and Broome in 2022. Founded by siblings Antoine, Mathieu, and Elsa Mothay (great-grandchildren of the founder of Saint James, of Marinière stripe fame), the contemporary brand has mastered creating desirable It bags through quality and imaginative design, with an added dose of TikTok virality.
From their Parisian atelier, the Polène team dreams up handmade pieces with innovative silhouettes. The bags are crafted in supple leather by artisans based in Ubrique, Spain, a region renowned for its leather expertise. The Mokki bag, in particular, features sophisticated folding techniques for its leather exterior and boasts a roomy, cotton-lined interior compartment.
The new Osmo bag, named after the French word for osmosis, showcases a modular construction in premium nappa leather with a glossy finish. To close, the flap slips neatly, if unexpectedly, into the center of the bag’s body. With this ingenious closure mechanism, Polène continues to prove that thoughtful design details can transform functional accessories into objects of desire.
