BRUSSELS — More than 48,300 of the approximately 50,000 people who entered the Spanish exclave of Ceuta from Morocco have returned, a Spanish government official told POLITICO.

“Most of the people that came yesterday are now back in Morocco,” said the official, who was granted anonymity to speak freely, adding that the situation was “on the path back to normality.”

The influx of migrants could be linked to a recent Spanish court ruling that limited the use of the country’s immediate-return procedure for migrants, the official added.

The European Commission said “there are no onward movements towards the European continent or other member states” by the migrants.
