Everything You Missed on 'House of the Dragon' Season 3 Episode 5

After weeks of action-packed episodes and plenty of plotting, the war between the Hightowers and Targaryens continues in House of the Dragon. With unrest in King’s Landing and mysterious enemies causing trouble, Rhaenyra’s crown rests uneasily on her head. Meanwhile, Alicent makes plans to escape the city and save her remaining children. Despite the constant battles, a larger conflict looms, spelling trouble for the central cast of characters.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 5 Recap

Rhaenyra may have taken hold of the Iron Throne, but the battle for control is still very much ongoing. Across the realm, armies fight for absolute dominance. The river armies, led by young Oscar Tully, march across the land on orders from Daemon. Despite their numbers, they have come across burned crossings and bridges—the work of Criston Cole’s army—that have delayed their advancement. As Tully discusses the issue with several of his co-commanders, they are ambushed by Cole and Gwayne Hightower, who set fire to the camp. 

At Harrenhal, a dark and stormy night makes for a spooky arrival for several sellswords who have come looking for Aemond after hearing about the bounty Rhaenyra has set on him. Alys intercepts the trio and scares them away with talk of ghosts and blood. Elsewhere in the ruined castle, Aemond wakes up after a fitful dream, distressed. Alys embraces him and sings him back to sleep as he whispers about his mother. 

In King’s Landing, Maester Orwyle arrives at Alicent and Helaena’s chamber with a tonic. Alicent tries to get Helaena to drink it to stop her pregnancy, but Helaena refuses. With Aegon and Aemond missing, Alicent says she is trying to keep Helaena safe, but Helaena says she has seen visions of Aemond at Harrenhal. 

Somewhere else in the castle, Rhaenyra is being pursued by Lady Frey, who is outraged that she has offered Harrenhal up to whoever kills Aemond. She reminds the queen of the promises that Jacaerys made, and Rhaenyra offers a seat on her council instead, which Lady Frey accepts unhappily. In the council meeting, Lord Manderly and Lady Frey exchange whispers about the arguments and unfamiliar faces around the table. Rhaenyra commands Addam and Baela to find Vhagar and Aemond after hearing about a sighting of the dragon, but Addam says Baela needs rest. Rhaenyra says that Daemon should go instead, but he refuses on account of the mysterious killings plaguing the City Watch as of late. After a frustrating meeting, Rhaenyra leaves and is told that her son Joffrey has returned from the Vale. He has asked to see her, but she says she will go later. 

In the woods, Aegon and Larys wander aimlessly, looking to get away from Rook’s Rest. Aegon blames Aemond for all of his misery and swears to kill him when he finds him. 

Mysaria enters Alicent and Helaena’s chambers after hearing whispers of the tonic delivered earlier. She asks to see the tonic and takes a sniff, looking knowingly at Alicent. Alicent claims it is for her and drinks it. She tries to appeal to Mysaria and asks her not to tell Rhaenyra, fearing what she would do if she finds out about Helaena’s pregnancy. 

On the road, Gwayne and Cole carry on. Gwayne offers Criston a home at Oldtown, but before their conversation continues, their horses begin to panic and buck their riders. Gwayne finds crow’s feet sticking out of the ground, and identifies that as the source of the horses‘ harm. 

Pondering her options, Alicent takes off her necklace and looks at it intently. 

Daemon and the Gold Cloak commander wander the city, looking for signs of the growing conspiracy against the men of the watch. They come across two guards in an alley, slaughtered viciously. A girl watches from the side and runs off. She arrives in an unremarkable house and whispers to a man, who sends a message that eventually lands in Ormund’s hand. 

In Tumbleton, Ormund makes plans to secure the city as Rhaenyra’s armies grow closer. Daeron says he has been studying Hightower history, as requested by Ormund. He recites what he has learned, and Ormund tells him about Meria Martell and her legendary military instinct. They play chess as they talk, and Daeron wins. He brushes it off as lucky and asks to play again, but Ormund sweeps the pieces off of the board and stands up. He tells Daeron never to apologize for victory. He pulls out several gold coins and shows them to Daeron. They feature his likeness, and Ormund says he has had them made in anticipation of Daeron’s ascension to the throne. 

Back in King’s Landing, Alicent tells Helaena they must leave tonight, fearing for their safety with Helaena’s pregnancy. With all of the chaos going on with the Gold Cloaks, Alicent thinks it is a good time. Helaena notices her mother’s necklace is missing, and Alicent explains she tendered it to a maid to secure their passage through the castle. Helaena refuses to leave Jahaera behind, but Alicent says it might be smart to leave her to ward with Rhaenyra. Helaena knows she is lying, and walks away. 

Out in the wilderness, Baela and Addam wander. Baela says she wanted to be a hero, and regrets the pride that she believes caused Jacaerys‘ death. She says her fate has turned, and wonders what Rhaenyra will do with her now. Addam promises to save her from being married away. 

In Harrenhal, Aemond wakes up once again. He asks about Vhagar, but Alys says the dragon has flown away. He becomes distressed and starts wandering around and asking if he is a prisoner. He looks out over the land. „Without Vhagar, I’m nothing,“ he says. He asks what has happened to Aegon, and Alys tells him what Rhaenyra has decreed, but warns she doesn’t know how much is true. Aemond reflects on his relationship with his brother, and recalls that he was always tormented by him, even though he worshipped him. Aemond also says that Alicent loved Aegon more, but Alys doubts that. 

As he continues to wander, Aegon starts to do some thinking of his own. He admits to Larys that his dragon is dead and he will never be able to kill Aemond. Aegon complains that Aemond always had advantages over him and claims Alicent loved him more. Larys, frustrated with Aegon’s whining, says that his fate is his own fault. He tells Aegon that he could have risen to greatness, but was lazy and mediocre instead. He says that Aegon was a terrible king, and even worse, a terrible man. He turns around and leaves, heading back to Rook’s Rest. 

In King’s Landing, Rhaenyra is sitting at the devotional table in the sept. Daemon sees her sitting there and laughs. He kneels with her and updates her on the crisis with the Gold Cloaks. As several septons enter, they begin speaking in High Valyrian. Rhaenyra notes a purpose and pattern with the killings, and they talk through the obstacles and enemies facing them. She says that her enemy feels cold and formless, but Daemon says she is imagining omens when there are none. 

On the road, Gwayne and Cole cut through the forest. Gwayne expresses his doubts about the plan, but Cole ignores him and proceeds ahead to cut off the rivermen’s path. 

Aegon returns to Larys‘ side at Rook’s Rest. He tells Larys to go ahead with hiring the ship, and Larys hands him an apple. A stranger approaches and inquires about the ship. The camera turns, and reveals that the stranger is Tyland Lannister. 

Later that night, Alicent and Helaena leave their chamber disguised as maids. Mysaria catches them immediately, and they return to the room. Alicent reveals that Helaena is pregnant, not her. She urges Mysaria to think of herself, not just Rhaenyra. She desperately says that if Mysaria does not tell Rhaenyra, she will earn a favor with the Hightowers, should she need one. Elsewhere in the castle, Rhaenyra peeks into Joffrey’s room, but finds he has fallen asleep. The maid says that he tried to stay awake for her, but couldn’t. 

Gwayne and Cole continue to move through the rain and mud, looking worse for the wear. 

Another group of sellswords arrives at Harrenhal looking for Aemond. Alys emerges from the castle, trying to convince them to leave, but they attack her. Aemond charges out from the castle and kills them all. 

In Rook’s Rest, Larys and Tyland argue about where to take Aegon. Janos listens from the shadows and discovers Aegon’s true identity, but Aegon discovers him and kills him. 

The Gold Cloaks argue, but Daemon silences them and quells their worries about the recent attacks and their lack of payment. He wins them over, reminding them of their duty. Before long, Daemon is told they have found someone responsible for the deaths. 

Cole and Gwayne finally make their way to the river, only to find that the rivermen have crossed the bridge and burned it behind them. Gwayne, dejected from the long trek and the string of failures, walks away. Cole looks angrier than ever as he looks out over the scene. 

Daemon tortures the man behind the city watch killings. Eventually, he reveals that he was put up to it by a supporter of Daeron’s, and pulls Ormund’s coin out of his boot. Daemon takes the coin, and the man is killed. 

Back on the road, Gwayne says that perhaps this outcome is the best they could have hoped for. He advises returning to Ormund to regroup. Cole declines the offer and suggests rafting or swimming the river. Gwayne notes they are outnumbered 200 to one in battle against the rivermen, but Cole insists on fighting them, even in the face of certain death. Gwayne asks why Cole does not take his offer, and Cole explains that he has been a servant all his life. Exhausted and fearful, a tear falls down Gwayne’s face as he listens to him speak. Cole says he will not return spurned or rejected. Instead, he quietly declares himself the realm’s greatest warrior, and says that he will die as such, unbent and glorious in battle, in his own service, not anyone else’s. He says people will sing songs of him, and Queen Alicent herself will hear them. 

Alyn is talking to Rhaenyra about Driftmark’s fleets when Daemon enters and shows her the coin. He says they should have burned Ormund when they had the chance, and leaves. 

Cole delivers a speech to his army, urging them to keep going, and Gwayne turns to leave. 

Helaena finds a hidden door in the chamber, and she and Alicent wander through the tunnel. They come to the end and are trapped inside of it in the dark. 

Daemon returns to the Gold Cloak’s quarters, and finds it burned out and empty. He stumbles upon a scene of his men, slaughtered and left at a table for him to find. The words ‚A Feast for Traitors‘ is written on the wall in blood.
