Was there ever a time when you were shopping for a new fragrance, sprayed different aromas on the classic white stripes of cardstock, and had to stop in your tracks because it brought back memories? Agreeably, this is a common occurrence that has played out for many while exploring new selections.

When it comes to the world of fragrance, each distinct scent is fundamental to one’s lived experiences. From the first perfume that a loved one gifted you as a child to the niche perfume that is no longer produced, the ways that aroma carries emotional recollections can instantly impact one’s mood and mentality.

In fact, research has consistently shown that the brain is the connecting force that brings memories and scents together. This sensation can be traced to the word „redolent,“ meaning both fragrant and reminiscent of a certain time. Hence, consumers want to tap into the familiar, especially during uncertain times.

Maybe it’s the smell of „White Diamonds“ by Elizabeth Taylor that your grandmother used to spray only for special events, „Cucumber Melon“ from Bath & Body Works that became your go-to fragrance as a teenager, or even Marc Jacobs‘ „Daisy“ that reminds you of hugging your mother before heading out for a trip. But in the conversation of nostalgic fragrances, one reigns supreme: Britney Spears Fragrances.

As the „Princess of Pop“ continued to rise in fame, her likeness expanded into video games, commercials, dolls, clothing, and books. However, when she partnered with Elizabeth Arden in 2004 to launch „Curious,“ her first perfume, it solidified Spears as a celebrity perfume icon. Not only did the release become the company’s highest first-week gross for a fragrance, but it eventually led to the artist selling over a million units in the first five years globally.

Whether it was Spears‘ iconic hits like „Piece of Me“ or „Gimme More,“ or the fruity-floral notes that dominated the perfume line, she now has 42 fragrances under the brand, and they have stayed cult staples for women who had a bottle during their adolescent years in the 2000s. Simply put, the artist’s wide range of fragrances has united millennials and Gen Z’ers for its affordable yet memory-provoking effects.

When Maison Margiela partnered with L’Oréal in 2009 to release „Replica,“ the house’s first fragrance, it became well-loved for its ability to name and capture memories through smell. Inspired by the brand’s 1994 Replica collection that featured upcycled accessories and clothing, each edition transforms the wearer into the collective memory, which summons shared memories and personal histories.

From classics like „Lazy Sunday Morning“ and „Jazz Club“ to discontinued favorites like „Tea Escape“ and „Lipstick On,“ the fragrance’s names recall certain moments in one’s life, both prominent and forgotten. Notably, the 2021 scent „Matcha Meditation“ had many (including myself) in a dreamy haze for its green tea, orange blossom, and white chocolate notes.

This sensation would only last a few years before „Afternoon Delight“ replaced the green-forward scent in 2024. So, like many who longed for nostalgic fragrances, I bought the bottle on a reseller website and only spray it once in a while. Yet, the ways that people consume in the fragrance world have been changed thanks to social media.

Yes, nostalgic scents can still be easily purchased online. But a new format has become well known among scent enthusiasts and beyond: TikTok Lives. Yes, people are joining livestreams on the popular platform to participate in auctions that are offering certain editions of beloved fragrances, unique bottles, and even scents that aren’t available on the mass market.

Accounts such as @fragrancenet, @giftexpress, and @fragrancegalore.official have capitalized on using the bidding experience that TikTok’s LIVE Auction offers for business accounts. Whether it’s a collection of Arabian oils, dupes of iconic designer fragrances, or even exclusive niche scents with a limited run, hundreds of users are engaging with familiar aromas at an affordable price.

Sure, nostalgia can be seen solely as a marketing tactic to get people shopping, particularly when a host goes through multiple products per minute, tries their best to persuade potential buyers in the chat, and dances to music to amp up the energy. Still, powerful emotion offers a great way to tap into better times, long-lost memories, and moments that can be overlooked during busy times.

If you want to channel your inner child that watched Saturday cartoons or go back to a night full of fun with friends, look into certain aesthetics, notes, and settings that defined the moment. Trust me, it’ll be a rewarding experience whenever you need it most.
