Have you ever wanted to look „Into The World Of Other Consciousness“ or „Cry Your Way To God?“ Well, if you answered yes to this question, Mexican-American fashion designer Willy Chavarria wants you to realize that „We Are The Light“ with his latest collection, „Comunión.“

For his fourth showing at Paris Fashion Week, Chavarria wanted resilience, love, and celebration to be the main focus of the collection. Does the designer acknowledge that fear is at an all-time high in our world? Absolutely. However, through the help of bright color palettes, fearlessly Chicano roots, and crisp suiting, the ability to play around with fashion will always prevail, despite the circumstances.

“Each garment, each bag, every shoe was designed with warmth,“ Chavarria said in the show notes. „There is a sense of joy in seeing the light. We realize that history has shown us what power we hold when we come together to do good. This is the joy and inspiration that each look holds. We are confident, kind, and tough.”

Taking place at the Espace Niemeyer, also known as the former Headquarters of the French Communist Party, in Paris, the 53-look collection playfully bounced off the architectural manifesto of Modernism. Oscar Niemeyer, the designer behind the structure, believed that buildings should combine the political and poetic while being in motion.

This perspective was exemplified through glass façades, concrete spaces, and lush shades of green, which make up the historic monument that remains one of Paris‘ most revolutionary works in recent history. In the spirit of the show, skincare powerhouse The Ordinary provided facials not just to the models, but to staff, make-up artists, hairstylists, and even security. Let’s just say, a moment of zen can take multiple forms, especially for the collection and Skin in Common initiative.

As the intimate circular runway scented of FlordeMusgo by XINÚ glowed, three violinists and a celloist dressed in all-black began to play their respective instruments. Model Erik Martinez Chachi, a more-than-familiar face to the brand, opened the show while wearing a pair of black Bad Boy Sunglasses, a black shrug-styled T-shirt, gold necklaces, a pack of „Willy Smokes“ cigarettes, a thin black belt with a gold „WC“ buckle, black leather pants, and a pair of black leather loafers. For those worrying about burning up in the all-black ensemble, especially during Paris‘ continuous heat, no need to, since the torso adds to the cool look.

Leather, florals, and bursts of colors took form through handbags, shirts, and jackets. The ever-popular cropped silhouette appeared in multiple looks, particularly as boxers were the meeting point of button-ups and baggy trousers. New York Knicks guard Jordan Clarkson walked the runway wearing a pair of black sunglasses, a spruce white unbuttoned dress shirt with flared collar and sleeves that revealed his tattoos, a butter-smooth blue leather jacket, a black leather clutch, pink and green plaid shorts, crew white socks, and brown loafers to top it off. Even though the high of the Knicks‘ recent NBA Championship hasn’t gone down, Clarkson’s appearance was a slam dunk.

Before the show, a special collaboration between two well-known forces of fashion, UGG and Willy Chavarria, was revealed online. With prior partnerships alongside brands such as Adidas Originals, Zara, Don Julio, and Pro Club, Chavarria is more than ready to expand his eponymous label’s universe through the sheepskin boot brand. Eventually, model Romeo Beckham debuted the UGG Willy Chavarria Guard Boot while sporting an open grey dress top with rolled-up sleeves (which was layered under a mint green shirt of the same style), aquatic blue boxers, a thin black belt with the brand’s logo, and black shorts. Frayed separates, flowy dresses with sown-in capes, and slit skirts that reveal a different color fabric were unexpected yet fun surprises for Chavarria.

To round out the collection, a model wore a pink high-neck sleeveless dress that featured a bow at the hip and matching seafoam green pumps and clutch. When the model completes her walk, the venue turned red, the musicians changed their tempo, and a sense of urgency ensued for a moment. The finale arrived, which brought the original setting back, and models made their way down the runway before standing in place as Chavarria arrived to thank the audience. As the designer stood, all of the models walked right past him and embodied a sense of togetherness during a little chaos.

Attendees of the show were friends of the brand, including Maluma, Latin Mafia, Haider Ackermann, Tove Lo, The Martinez Brothers, Saint Jhn, Sebastián Yatra, Gigi Goode, Camelia Jordana, Alma Jodorowski, Luckly Love, Sita Abellan, Sven, Lunay, Osama Chabbi, Alleh Mezher, Nina Kravitz, Loreto Perlata, Diya Joukani, Diane Pernet, and Serge Carriera, amongst others.

Chicano photographer Louis Carlos Bernal’s work, specifically the feelings it evoked, was a huge inspiration for „Comunión“ and its interpretation of community. In the company of signature house codes, a diverse cast, and the power of unison through fashion, the collection easily outdid itself once again and continues to be a powerhouse of combining the social and political with fashion, not just for Latinos, but for everyone.
